This project has begun in South Western Nepal in Singaha primary school in Rupendehi district, one hours walk from the main road and five hours drive from Kathmandu.
Singaha school has 215 students in grade 1-5 and an early childhood class for the 3-5 year old children with 42 students.
The school has five teachers of which only three are paid by the state. The headmaster mr. Chudamani enjoys a lot of respect in the local society and has been the headmaster of the school for 25 years.
Around 80 students come from a small dalit community named Soiya approximately one hours walk from the school. The parents used to chase the teachers away when they came for their yearly enrollment campaign, but these days the relation is better and three mothers attend School Management Committee meetings regularly.
The school has had a lunch programme run by world food programme before. So some facilities are there. However, no actual kitchen. To improve hygiene, the school will receive 40000 Nrp. for a simple kitchen from a private donor. The parents will have to supply the labour power for this project, which will be formally inaugurated in mid-April 2009.
Some statistics from the Singaha primary school:
Average pass rate 80,1% - and there is a sad gap between 73 enrolled children in grade 1 and 19 children passing grade 5 exams. That has to change!
