In Nepal food prices are growing but wages are not and for the landless this is a disaster which means that the poor get even less then they did before. Many poor children seldom or never get lunch for the six hours they are in school. If the children get a healthy meal they are able to concentrate better, learn more and get a better education. Something which is desperately needed among the poor of Nepal. If food is provided attendance will increase Indian research shows that more parents send their children to school if there is a free meal provided by the school. In southern Nepal some kids literally run away from school because they are hungry. Even though parents do not understand the value of education to begin with, they surely understand the value of food.
If mothers cook, their responsibility and sense of ownership of the school increase Poor mothers may not have any money but they can contribute by helping out in the kitchen once in a while. If mothers donate a days’ work to cook for the school lunch becomes cheaper and mothers get to know the school better which may increase their support to the school and to the children’s education. This extra attention may in turn improve the teaching. Mothers who feel that the school is theirs demand more from the teachers in terms of attendance and quality of teaching, two areas were many public schools in Nepal need to improve.
A strong School Management Committee makes a better school If the school management committee coordinates a lunch program they have a hands-on task to do together. This will increase their cooperation in other aspects also.
